The last memories in the middle east (1)

 The start in the Middle East was quite sudden, and in some ways, life wasn't easy.

Of course, when I say life wasn't easy, I mean it was enjoyable, always challenging, and filled with excitement every day.

The first impression of Dubai was incredibly strong.

After a flight of over 10 hours from Korea, I arrived in Dubai. The sunset light shining through the brown sand dust, and the skyscrapers that looked like a bundle of arrows gathered together, evoked more excitement about being in a new place than worry about living in the Middle East.

I still remember the bags we picked up at the airport: exactly 23 suitcases and boxes, and naturally, we rented a van. The back seat of the van was filled with our two kids and luggage, and thinking back, it was quite a nerve-wracking drive.

The day had already turned to night, and an oblivious Asian was driving on the vibrant highways of Dubai at night to get to the hotel.

We simply followed the signs to exit Dubai Airport, and soon found ourselves on the smooth highways typical of the Middle East. The Sheikh Zayed Highway, named after the tribal leader who unified the once tribal society of the United Arab Emirates—locally pronounced as Emiraati—was the largest toll highway.

After driving through the smooth Dubai highway, we soon arrived at our temporary residence in the Marina area, which was as glamorous as selecting only the best aspects of yacht clubs from around the world. It was dazzling, sparkling, impressively clean, and unbearably hot.

And so, we began our few years of life in Dubai. (To be continued)

중동에서의 시작은 너무 갑작스러웠고, 어떻게 보면 쉽지 않았던 생활이였다.

물론 생활이 쉽지 않았다는 것이지, 삶은 즐겁고, 항상 도전이였으며, 흥분되는 일이 매일 있었던 것이라고 정의하고 싶다.

두바이의 첫 인상은 무척이나 강렬했다.

한국에서 부터 10시간 넘게 비행해서 도착한 두바이. 브라운 색의 모래먼지 사이에서 비춰지는 노을빛. 그리고 노을빛 사이에서 보이는, 한다발의 화살을 모아 놓은듯한 마천루들은 앞으로 중동에서 살아야 된다는 걱정 보다는 새로운 곳에 대한 흥분이 더 컸었던것 같다.

공항에서 찾아온 가방들은 지금도 기억하는데 정확히 23개의 케리어와 박스들이였으며, 렌트카는 당연히 밴을 빌렸었다. 밴 뒷자리에는 우리 두 녀석들과 짐들로 가득 찼으며, 지금도 생각하면 아찔한 드라이브를 했던것 같다.

어느새 날은 저물어 있었으며, 밝은날도 너무나 활기로 넘치는 두바이 고속 도로를 아무것도 모르는 동양인이 밤에 운전해서 호텔을 갔던 것이다.

두바이 공항은 그야말로 표지판만 따라 가다가 빠져 나왔으며, 중동 특유의 매끄러운 고속도로를 어느샌가 달리고 있었다. 세이크자이드 고속도로는 예전 다 부족 사회인 아랍에미레이츠 - 현지 발음으로 에미라띠 - 를 통합시켜 United Arab Emirates를 만든 연합 부족의 부족장으로 그 이름을 따서 가장 큰 유료 고속도로에 이름 붙였다.

매끄러운 두바이 고속도로를 지나 우리는 어느새 임시 숙소인 마리나 지역에 도착했었고, 그 화려한 모습은 마치 전세계 요트 클럽의 멋진 모습들만 골라서 만들어 놓은 모습이였다. 화려하고, 반짝였으며, 놀랄만큼 깔끔했으며, 기절할 만큼 더웠다.

그렇게 우리는 몇년간의 두바이 생활을 시작했다. (계속)
